Air Traffic Gets Halted in Greece Due to System Breakdown

(MENAFN) On Sunday morning, all aircraft movements to and from Greece were briefly halted following a countrywide communications breakdown that disrupted air navigation control systems, according to a national broadcaster.

Later in the day, operations slowly recommenced, beginning at Athens International Airport, where both takeoffs and landings resumed, as stated by the airport’s management.

The interruption occurred around 9:35 a.m. local time (0735 GMT), impacting Greek skies and suspending both incoming and outgoing flights at Athens International Airport along with regional hubs.

Thousands of travelers were left waiting for hours at airports across the nation, while several incoming planes were rerouted.

Initial reports indicated that the issue stemmed from a circuit fault within the central radio frequency infrastructure of the air traffic control centers overseen by Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority.

As a safety measure, the Ministry of Transport announced that only “overflights” — aircraft passing through Greek airspace without landing — were permitted to continue during the outage.

Altogether, approximately 90 flights were disrupted at Athens International Airport, around 75 at Thessaloniki Airport in northern Greece, and numerous others at airports throughout the country.
